This field based training provides hands on instruction in tree and shrub site preparation and establishment using NRCS Practice Standards 490 (Tree/Shrub Site Preparation) and 612 (Tree/Shrub Establishment). Participants will perform field evaluations to assess conditions such as vegetation cover, soil compaction, and slope, and will select appropriate site preparation techniques based on NRCS specifications. The training emphasizes understanding the connection between site preparation and successful plant establishment, including how factors like soil health, competition control, and planting timing influence survival rates. Participants will also review tree and shrub protection methods, evaluate the pros and cons of various options based on local browse pressure, and discuss mulching techniques that meet NRCS requirements. By the end of the training, participants will be able to inspect existing planting sites for compliance with NRCS standards and develop comprehensive site specific plans that include vegetation management, species selection, planting layout, and long term maintenance strategies.
