This Tech Talk provides basic information for several species of livestock that may be raised on pasture, including the following topics. 

• Livestock terminology
• The different kinds/classes of grazing livestock
• Dietary preferences of each species and basic nutritional requirements for each species
• The roles that dietary preferences and nutritional requirements play in developing grazing systems
• Basic livestock production systems
• Reproduction
• Marketing:  Where do animals go when they leave the farm?
• Stock flow on the farm: Summarizing how to maintain animals in a year-round livestock operation

This Tech Talk is designed for people with little or no experience with livestock. 

Brian Ebel, NRCS Water Resource Engineer, discusses the basic concepts of irrigation. Attendees will gain insight into why and when irrigation is used and how it is accomplished in Minnesota. This introduction to irrigation will include:

• Water Availability in Soil for Plant Use
• Types of Irrigation, with specifics for Center Pivot Systems
• Irrigation Scheduling Methods
• EQIP 449 Irrigation Water Management

User Training (NRCS/SWCD/TSA staff): All NRCS, TSA, and SWCD staff with an existing eLINK account can create and update their own training needs, enter or modify their training history and non-JAA/other credentials, and view existing JAA credentials. Information about technical training (needs or courses taken) can be updated at any time, either throughout the year as JAA or other certifications are obtained or once each year in preparation for the posted reporting deadline, typically each fall.

Manager Training: All eLINK users with a “Manager” role within an NRCS, SWCD, TSA can view and edit training needs and training history on behalf of their organization’s staff. Additionally, they have the ability to access the “Organizational Priorities” component, which is only available to staff with a “Manager role”. This component allows this user type to enter their organization’s priority resource needs, and the priority practices used to address those needs. This allows the organization to prioritize individual training needs on behalf of their staff, and also allows the TTCP program to prioritize the trainings they will provide. We’ll teach anyone with a “manager” or “administrator” role how to enter their organization’s priority needs and practices into the system for TTCP staff to use to evaluate training needs.

(Time: will vary) This course is designed to introduce the student to the fundamental basics of prescribed burning. At the end of the course the student should have a working knowledge of fire law, fire terminology, fire prescriptions, firebreaks, smoke management and a basic understanding of how to conduct a prescribed burn. This course is not intended to take the place of workshops, training sessions and actual experience in the field conducting prescribed burns. "Basic Prescribed Fire Training" should give the student an understanding of the principles of prescribed fire and fire effects. Upon satisfactorily completing all chapters of this training the student can print a certificate of completion.
