Why
Many impacts such as climate change, habitat loss, invasive species, pesticides, and disease are influencing the resiliency of landscapes and leading to the loss of plant and animal populations. The decline of wildlife including beneficial insects (pollinators, butterflies, dragonflies, etc.), birds, amphibians and other species, is a significant concern for conservation professionals and residents of Minnesota. These species provide a foundation for food production, food webs and native ecosystems.
Planning Conservation for Bobwhite Quail
This farm tour in Houston County will focus on understanding the habitat needs of Bobwhite Quail and how to plan landscapes that support their conservation. Participants will explore real world examples, learn about available conservation programs, and see firsthand how a landowner successfully maintains a naturalized Bobwhite population. The event emphasizes practical insights into habitat design, management, and quail ecology.

Wetland Training Schedule and Registration
2026 MWPCP Courses:
Virtual Training
MWPCP online training focuses on the regulatory aspects of implementing the Wetland Conservation Act in Minnesota. There are no fees for our online regulatory courses. However, participants are required to register in advance.
Mid Season Plant ID
We will be visiting the same site twice this summer to get a sense of how plants change over their growth cycle. Participants in this field based training will learn to identify native and weedy herbaceous plants, practice teaching plant ID skills, and evaluate long term establishment of species in different prairie seed mixes. They will also explore pollinator identification, grassland management practices, and engage in quizzes and discussions to reinforce learning. By the end, participants will better understand plant materials, prairie reconstruction outcomes, and strategies for improving wildlife habitat.

Enforcement
Compliance is the Goal
While we strive to gain 100% voluntary compliance, in some cases, enforcement action may be needed. Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCDs) are tasked with determining individual compliance and assisting landowners with ways to come into compliance with the law if a buffer or alternative practice is missing.
